Definition
Major soil group: 09 made ground soils Soils formed in a significant thickness of either artificial man-made material or former soil material or geological substrate that has undergone mechanical removal, transport and replacement.
Soil Group: 4 dense made ground soils Soils described as dense contain a subsurface layer that is at least 15 cm thick, starts within 40 cm depth, is slightly or very slightly porous with high packing density and shows no contemporary evidence of wetness in or above it. IN ADDITION, they are formed on sloping sites of at least 3 degrees. Dense soils tend to be droughty with a low leaching and high erosion potential because their structural conditions restrict rooting and the downward percolation of water, whereas their position on sloping ground means that a relatively large proportion of rainfall is lost as surface run-off.
Soil Subgroup: 1 calcareous dense made ground soils Soils which contain, at or within 40 cm depth, at least 1% CaCO, equivalent in the fraction < 2 mm AND have a pH (in water, 1:2.5) of at least 6.5 in any superficial noncalcareous layers. Calcareous soils have a base saturated exchange complex dominated by calcium, although significant amounts of magnesium may also be present. They are likely to support vegetation in which calcicoles form an important component.
