The Soil Survey of England and Wales (SSEW) surveyed many sites by auger bore observation of the soil profile during its active years between 1939 and 1987. Much of the legacy of this work can be found electronically in LandIS and also in the original records, publications and maps in the soil survey archive at Cranfield University.
The images presented here show a subsample of the available auger bore information in LandIS at Cranfield University. The images represent the soil profile described at the location with information on each soil horizon identified by the surveyor. These images show the following information for each soil horizon: the horizon depths; soil texture (using the standard SSEW texture triangle) and the soil matrix colour (translated into RGB from the Munsell Colour).
